If you are suffering from sciatica, arthritis of the spine, or a herniated disc, you might benefit from spinal decompression therapy. Spinal decompression is a non-invasive, drug-free, non-surgical chiropractic treatment method that addresses back pain, neck pain, and sciatica. At Duluth Chiropractic and Wellness Center, our chiropractor Dr. Steven Sommer has extensive experience treating chronic pain and spinal misalignment with spinal decompression in Duluth, GA. Dr. Sommer and his team will perform a thorough examination and diagnostic testing to uncover the root cause of your pain or sciatica, and can then recommend spinal decompression or other chiropractic therapies.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment method that uses gentle, motorized traction to shift the spine, discs, and joints back into place. The treatment changes the force and position of the spine, which can cause bulging or herniated discs to retract and relieve pressure on other structures. Spinal decompression can relieve pressure and tension and restore the flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the spine.

What Is Done During Spinal Decompression?

Before you undergo spinal decompression, we will have you lie fully-clothed on a comfortable motorized traction table. Your knees will be slightly bent so that your legs are resting over a padded block. We will fit you into a harness to stabilize you as the table moves. Dr. Sommer will then control the movement of the table using a special computer program. The table will shift and move, gently stretching your spine, muscles, joints, and limbs. The treatment might take around 30-45 minutes, and we may recommend 20-30 treatments over the next two months.

What Conditions Are Treated With Spinal Decompression?

Back pain and neck pain can be caused by wear and tear to the spine, spinal discs, or the nerves and muscles that support the spine. Spinal decompression can treat pressure on the spinal nerves, discs, and muscles so that you have relief from pain, stiffness, inflammation, and immobility. We recommend spinal decompression therapy as a treatment method for:

  • Herniated discs
  • Bulging discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Pinched nerves
  • Sciatica
  • Bone spurs
  • Arthritis of the spine
  • Spinal stenosis

How Painful Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is not painful. It is a very gentle process that most people find relaxing and soothing. Most people experience immediate relief after treatment. You should be able to return to your regular daily activities immediately after treatment with no downtime or recovery time.

Should I Undergo Spinal Decompression?

You should undergo spinal decompression if you have chronic pain or discomfort, sciatica, a herniated disc, arthritis of the spine, or one of the other conditions mentioned above. We do not recommend spinal decompression for patients who:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have a spinal implant
  • Have a spinal fracture
  • Have had a failed spinal surgery
  • Have an abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Have advanced osteoporosis
  • Have a spinal tumor
